St. Michael's Catholic School in Belleville brings HEART to its community

Pueblito visited St. Michael's Catholic School in Belleville March 5 th to present our Heart of the Community Program. Two groups of students (approximately 300) assembled in the gymnasium to hear Sharron Riley-Persson, Director of Development & Community Relations speak about Pueblito's worthwhile program aimed at bringing a variety of essential services to the initial 12 bateye communities (former sugar cane plantation communities) of the Regions of San Cristobal and West Santo Domingo. This program integrates health, nutrition, education, family involvement, community mobilization and advocacy at the regional level.

Expected Results

  • 1500 children 0-6 years are attending early education programs and receiving immunizations and primary health attention

  • 100 facilitators are being trained in Early Childhood Education and first aid and health care

  • 250 parents are supported in their parenting skills

"The impact from the information provided was very powerful and both our staff and students left the presentation with a deeper understanding of life for the impoverished children in the Dominican Republic", remarks Beverly Ann Byrne, Principal. "We are St. Michael's are very committed to this worthwhile program and the work that Pueblito accomplishes, and we hope more schools across the country embrace this opportunity to help the needy in other parts of the world."

Alyssa Riley, Jr. Kindergarten teacher lead the school in its Lenten fundraising drive on behalf of Pueblito's Heart of the Community Program, Principal, Beverly Ann Byrne, Sharron Riley-Persson Director of Development with Pueblito and a group of students from St. Michael's.
