Pueblito's Alumni Celebrate 30
Years of Helping Children in Latin America
|
The On May 13, 2005, long time Pueblito supporters came together to celebrate our 30th Anniversary. It was a time to reconnect with old friends, to reminisce about working on past projects and to learn more about Pueblito?s new program in Honduras. The highlight of the evening was listening to a letter from an individual who had benefited from Pueblito?s first ever program in Costa Rica.
In his own words M.R. (a beneficiary of Pueblito's first program
in Costa Rica) writes:
?Thanks to you one more time, after 30 years, I am writing to you to share some precious moments. You are here in this hall, talking about the old days and the future. But be sure every one of you, tonight, one abandoned kid is thinking of you and must be grateful for everything you did and are doing for them.
I was abandoned on the street in San Jose close to the welfare office, when I was 7 years old and my two sisters were 6 and 5 years old. ?one day in 1975 when I was 9 years old the life gave me and my two sisters, a beautiful sunny day. Some Canadian volunteers came to the orphanage and took us to Pueblito.
The first impression I have about Pueblito was the unconditional love received by the volunteers?Pueblito was a warm huge house with no walls, no guards, no wires or dry faces giving us very sad moments. Pueblito was full of a lot of hugs, a lot of smiles, a lot of attention for everyone there?
Everything I am in this moment, I owed to Pueblito and all of you, the volunteers that put a little help on me and still are for all the abandoned kids. The first day at Pueblito was like being born again in my life?
Nowadays, for some people is hard to accept that I was abandoned kid. Even, I look normal?Today I am a CPA (Certified Public Accountant), have one baby girl, having a family and my own two businesses. For that reason, I named myself as a ?great result of your great effort and help?. I am the result that you wanted for me. Every little help, advice or moment that you spent with me helped me a lot to be a good man. Good father, husband and citizen.?
There wasn?t a dry eye in the room.

Pueblito Launches Hope For the
Children Of Honduras |
A lively group of supporters and sponsors gathered earlier this year in April to raise funds for Pueblito?s exciting new ECCD program in Honduras. Surrounded by W-Studio?s (then known as Artweave) exquisite display of hand woven carpets, attendees sipped pomegranate/champagne cocktails (compliments of W-Studio) and munched on a Brazilian tinged selection of hors d?oeuvres compliments of Caju Restaurant (922 Queen Street West).
After welcoming remarks by President Betty Ann Taylor, guests focused on a
power point presentation describing the critical needs of young
Honduran children and Pueblito?s proposed project to improve the
situation in the rural region of Lepaterique, Honduras (for details refer to
program link). Following the presentation, supporters pinned their donation to
a Tree of Hope while others bid on auction items donated by generous sponsors.
In total over $10,000 was raised at the launch.
Pueblito thanks everyone who has donated to the Hope for Honduras project, not
only at the launch but also through our follow up mail campaign. And we
especially thank those supporters who helped make this event such a success ?
Alan Pourvakil and Christine at W-Studio, Caju Restaurant, Tatania, Scotia
Bank, Teresa Ottens (who donated paintings for the auction) and of course all
of you who attended and were so generous in your support.
On August 12th, 2005, Pueblito Canada was thrilled to act as host to over 900 people attending a performance of the amazing Cirque De Soleil under the ?Big Top? at Ontario Place. Anyone who has been lucky enough to see a performance of Cirque knows of the breathtaking skill and artistry displayed by all the highly talented performers in Cirque?s troop. This year?s show, Corteo, was presented for the first time in Toronto.
Pueblito is truly honoured to count the Cirque De Soleil amongst its list of supporters. This year Cirque donated 977 tickets to Pueblito to sell with all proceeds of the sale going to support the many children?s programs sponsored by Pueblito in Central and South America. The continuing generosity of the Cirque De Soleil is truly appreciated by Pueblito Canada.
The performance by Cirque De Soleil was preceded by a dinner and presentation of the 2005 ?Making Children A Priority? award at the Caju Restaurant on Queen St W. The winners of this year?s award, Izaura Parda, Rukiya Moallim and Seema Sharma are all volunteers at Rexdale Community Health Center. See Latest News link to MCAP awards for more information.
